To honor his beautiful wife who died young. Regilla was her name. This is why, Herodes Αtticus built the theatre. Don’t get confused, he is not the same person with the Herod, the Roman king of Judea.
Herodes Atticus and Regilla -from the 2nd century until the present- have been considered great benefactors in Greece, and particular in Athens.
The couple are commemorated in Herodou Attikou Street and Rigillis Street and Square, in downtown Athens.
In Rome, their names are also recorded on modern streets.

i didn’t know. Thank you monsieur 🙂

The picture of a theatre you have as a feature image in one of your posts is the theatre of Dionysos, which is south. You have to walk a bit, following the left direction in my pictures… haha…

Thank you, Gen-X. I visited ancient Olympia once, and I saw her name written on a stone. They used to “give” gifts to the Gods, They were placing them into the temples. And then they used to write the names of the ones (somewhere, stones, woods, marbles) for whom they would ask the gods for favors and to help them to overcome different kind of struggles, and, especially, they used to ask favors and help to overcome health issues.
I was in shock -somehow- cause i didn’t expect that i would see her name, since the place is huge and full of stones, and temples. I was really touched, since i knew the story. And i knew that Herodes was a rich wise man, and an official with great power. The story says that when she died, he painted everything black, everything. She was Roman and extremely beautiful. He was in Love with her.
Anyway, there is more. One thought of mine was : Look, the f…n stone is still here, after so many, many years. F…n gods.
