Love and Death |
The “Mauthausen Trilogy” -also known as “The Ballad of Mauthausen”, and the “Mauthausen Cantata”– is a cycle of four arias with lyrics based on poems written by the Greek poet Iakovos Kambanellis, a Mauthausen concentration camp survivor. Mikis Theodorakis is the composer of the music. It has been described as the “most beautiful musical work ever written about the Holocaust”.and as “an exquisite, haunting and passionate melody that moves Kambanellis’ affecting words to an even higher level”.
Iakovos falls in love with a Jewish girl. This song is about how love can bloom in a place where death is dominant.
